"I want to hear deeply, clearly, accurately enough that I am able -- to some real extent -- to feel what you feel, hurt a bit where you hurt, and want for you the freedom to be all you are becoming."

God's People Relating to Others

What is reflective listening?

Reflective listening is a combination of two creative processes:

  1. A real understanding of what the speaker is attempting to say through words and body language
  2. Reflecting those feelings and thoughts through words, tone of voice, body posture, and gestures so that the speaker knows he/she is being understood

Reflective listening focuses on the speaker's emotions and concerns rather than on the listener's experiences and advice.

The only sure way to know what someone means is to reflect their words and feelings back to them for clarification.

Why is reflective listening so important?

We believe that every one of us longs for someone to listen and understand our feelings without judging us, trying to fix our problem or giving us unwanted advice. By listening reflectively to someone, we allow emotional healing to take place in his/her life.

As believers we have been given a mandate to minister God's love and healing to the wounded, and ALL of us have been wounded at some time and in some way. It is the desire of People to People Ministries to teach and train believers to use reflective listening skills in their daily interactions.
